An enjoyable series opener that lays the foundation for future adventures with a nice balance of sensational, suspense, and silliness. Also, a knowing critique of small town life, with kids conspiring to protect their secrets from nosy adults. Entertaining and engaging.

Ben Silverstein is looking at having the most boring summer vacation ever. He has to spend the best months of the year in run down old Buttonville with his grandpa. He almost falls asleep thinking about it.
As he's busy being totally bored he sees his grandpa's cat bring home what looks like a baby dragon... that can't be right. Can it? When the tiny little monster breathes a stream of fire into Ben's face he has to admit that he has a baby dragon sitting on his bed. Probably not the best place for it. With the help of a new friend (whether he likes it or not) Pearl Petal he has to figure out what to do with this little fire breather. It clearly needs the help of a Veterinarian because the cat kind of squished it but the only place in town is Dr. Woo's Worm Hospital. It's worth a try.
Once they get inside the dark and crusty old building things go from weird to really very weird. And then they let the Sasquatch out and things go completely crazy. Dr. Woo isn't really a worm vet, she's an Imaginary Animal Vet (the Sasquatch is in because he has a rash) and it turns out that Ben is in for the most exciting summer of his life.
The Sasquatch Escape by Suzanne Selfors is the first in the new series The Imaginary Veterinary.

Read with daughter, 9. Really liked the cast and story, Pearl is a strong female character. The illustrations were well done and with just the right frequency. Has the makings of a good series. Recommended! (Aug 22-25)
