A young woman is raped and murdered in a Buenos Aires suburb and the police inspector assigned to the investigation, Benjamin Esposito, finds his inquiries hampered by bureaucracy and a judge who seems more intent on a quick fix than actual justice. Twenty-five years later the newly retired Esposito, still obsessing over what has now become a cold case, decides to create his own sense of closure by writing a novel about his experience. But his attempts to recreate the past open an old wound as he recalls the dead woman’s grieving husband whose painful longing begins to mirror Benjamin’s own unrequited feelings for Irene, the department chief whom he loved from afar. And then his recollections offer up some new clues and an old crime suddenly comes to life once more… Flowing dreamlike between past and present Juan José Campanella’s gentle meditation on love, regret, and the creative process strikes an intricate balance between straight-up policier, bittersweet romance, and biting social critique (the murder eventually shedding light on some monstrous government corruption). Going beyond the obvious Campanella also explores the many faces of grief with Esposito and Irene pining over missed opportunities, the widower’s shaky stoicism hiding a deeper hunger for revenge, and Esposito’s partner Pablo continually trying to drown a lifetime of frustrations at the local pub. Everyone, it seems, is haunted one way or another by the past. If the film occasionally lapses into melodrama—a passionate farewell at a train station should have been shot in B&W—it is only a testament to the director’s art as he causes us to wonder whether or not we are watching Benjamin’s memories of things as they actually happened or as he wanted them to happen. Beautifully shot with long meticulous takes that give heightened importance to people’s faces (the eyes!) and a background score of sad violins, this is one film that actually deserved its Oscar win.

This is an excellent movie, a little slow at times and it could be shortened a bit but still great. Very well written but I have a feeling that the subtitles leave out a lot of the great dialogue. Great performances by all. Very weak scene when the killer confesses, a la Few Good Men. But the ending is really something else. Top notch.

Excellent movie, the cast is great, acting, pace, subject, engaging, intriguing, better than most of the movies that received an Oscar. The subtitles are not true reflection of the dialog. I saw the movie twice because is rich in cultural details, historical aspects, very entertaining.

Really enjoyed it - gets your attention to the end and it is complex - enthralled by the obsession to solve the rape and murder and caught up in the need to render justice and his own fulfilment - the love story between the main character and his colleague wends its way in rather slowly but you are never sure what the situation is and the ex husband of the murdered girl is somewhat of an enigma. It seems long but there never is a dull moment.
