Don't know if I can say enough good things about this film. It is Tom Hanks' masterpiece. So skillfully filmed and magnificently portrayed. Although of course no fictionalized version of a true event from Hollywood can ever give the entire story, the viewer can easily believe that the facts are pretty well represented by this film, and the laudable character of Cpt. Phillips is portrayed accurately. I highly recommend this film. Not only is it highly entertaining in an edge-of-your-seat kind of way, but the events as they played out are fascinating.

Very suspenseful yet entertaining.

This movie shed a lot more light on the events surrounding the Maersk Alabama hijacking.

Tom Hanks gives a remarkable performance as Captain Richard Phillips of the U.S. flagged ship the Maersk Alabama. Somali pirates take control of his ship with only Tom Hanks on the bridge of the ship. The rest of the crew is hiding far down in the engine room. The movie centers on Tom Hanks as the captain and the Somali pirates. With subtitles we learn what they are saying to one another. They seem ruthless, yet Captain Phillips (Hanks) seems calm and using every diversion he knows to keep the pirates from his crew. It is so suspenseful that it will have you glued to your chair. A five star movie from start to finish!

Much better than I expected. Already being familiar with the much-publicized real-life story, I wasn't sure I would enjoy this film, but I did. Tom Hanks does a great job as the title character and the film manages to create a lot of suspenseful moments, even if you already know the story.

Overall, I found this story to be good, but not great. I'm not convinced that the Tom Hanks character was properly casted in the role. The plot appeared quite plausible. It's amazing though that the ship only had fire hoses to defend themselves. Hopefully, that has changed now.

This amazing film brought to life the complexity of the various governmental agencies involved in rescuing Captain Phillips, who had been kidnapped by Somali pirates for the purpose of a multi-million dollar ransom. While the film was over 2 hours long, that amount of time was needed to set up the recruitment of the kidnappers, the kidnapping, the chase and the rescue, etc. Prior to seeing the film, I had only a vague sense of the story. I had had no idea of the complexity of the operation and that the perfect point of execution lasted for a mere second. The film received numerous well-deserved Oscar nominations.

Good acting and tension, but we know there was more to the story than this.
