Too predictable, too American, too much like an American movie. At least, it is about working class people.

I have not served in the military and have no direct knowledge or experience of the things written about in this book. The story feels real to me. I do know teenagers who pretty much gave up their own dreams to take care of their families, of their younger siblings. This is what Lauren did. Joining up after she graduated from high school got her a good signing bonus that financially helped her brother and father. The price she paid was much more than the signing bonus was worth. This story gripped me, filling me with compassion, horror, worry and yet, yes, hope. Well worth a read, but be prepared to be upset.

Disregard book cover blurbs written by authors who "support" each other.

This novel tells a veteran's story much better done by other authors.

This author has written a trite, predictable soap opera with characters that are parodies, not remotely recognizable people.

You have to wonder...

"Ever since her mother left years earlier, Lauren Clay's been responsible for her bedridden father and young brother, Danny, choosing the Army over college to support them. She has recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, troubled and on edge, and fearful that the Internet has too strong a hold on Danny. As she distances herself from others, she takes him on a road trip, intending to teach him survival skills and also meet up with an Army friend. Told by both Lauren, who shares her wartime experiences with Danny, and by those who love Lauren and fear the changes they see in her, this novel quickly turns ominous."
