I haven't given a romance 5 stars in a long time - but Shadowdance completely deserves it. Without a doubt this is my favorite of the Darkest London series, so far.

Yes - both Mary and Jack are a bit angsty (especially Jack), but as you read deeper into the story and learn more about them and what they've gone through it becomes very clear that these are two very damaged people who are acting in very specific ways to protect themselves (and each other). The push and pull between them is a very real exploration of their actual histories and how they've dealt with what has happened to them in the past. And the tension between the two is fantastic.

In this installment of the series Callihan has finally gotten to the point where she has explained enough about the world and the supernatural that she doesn't need to go to great lengths to explain things - this makes the story flow well and not get as bogged down in exposition.

Shadowdance also includes one of the sweetest (first) love scenes I think I've ever read. The emotionality in this book was fantastic - and, although this is definitely still a paranormal - this is much more of a romance than the others in the series.

I would not recommend this as a first read, but rather as part of the Darkest London Series - I think you could read this as a standalone, but you would miss much of the history between Mary and Jack. I absolutely adored this book.
