Who ever thought that Paul McCartney could sound this hip again? "New"s modern sound doesn't come easily or effortlessly, of course - there's a whole team of producers on this one, and their overstuffed production often crowds out McCartney's typically bland (at times, seemingly lazy) songwriting. But despite all its flaws, this album kind of has to get an A for effort - and for sounding, at its best moments, really frickin' cool. Many an aging rock star has tried to hop on the modern bandwagon, but few have actually managed to stay atop it. "New", with its exciting, modern sheen and solidly McCartnian sensibilities, at least attains a solid foothold.

Two of the three tracks I found appealing were poorly engineered: both far louder than just about any CD tracks I've ever listened to; one with two vocal inputs unreasonably far apart in volume levels; the other with vocals' volume too low and instruments' too high. Am I right? Hard to believe Paul would allow such inferior engineering of his work to be released. If this album is what we can expect in future of the "New" Paul McCartney...
