San Francisco, 1876, is having a heatwave to break all records and there is an outbreak of smallpox as well. Jenny is shot dead in a railway station, but her friend Blanche survives. Blanche vows to do everything she can to find Jenny's killer. As she searches, she finds out that Jenny had a secret life: that she was a notorious law-breaker and charmer, a free-love bohemian who mixed in with a dangerous crowd. As Blanche pieces the story together, Jenny's murderer may be coming after her next.

During a heat wave and smallpox epidemic in 1876 San Francisco, Blanche Beunon, a burlesque dancer grapples with the violent death of her friend, Jenny Bonnet. The author skillfully transports the reader to life among the underclass in a boom town created by the 1849 Gold Rush. Vivid descriptions, period slang, song lyrics, and the clash among cultures in Chinatown take the reader back in time. This novel is based on an unsolved murder in 1870s San Francisco.

I've really liked other novels by this author, but this one so repetative, and the most interesting character dies early on and very little is revealed about her.
