As a boy, William Bellman commits one small, cruel act: killing a bird with his slingshot. Little does he know the unforeseen and terrible consequences of the deed, which is soon forgotten amidst the riot of boyhood games. By the time he is grown, with a wife and children of his own, William seems to be a man blessed by fortune, until tragedy strikes and the stranger in black comes. Then he starts to wonder if all his happiness is about to be eclipsed.

The reader is brilliant in every way, perfect to my ear & mimic of UK accents. My take on this is very different from other reviews. Details of the Victorian funerary culture & customs, many that are with us yet today. Fascinating descriptions of mill works, the choice of textiles & why chosen and conditions of era. Most reviewers prefer other Setterfield book, which I didn't 'get' at all. For me it's worth the print edition for clarification. The preview print description & title don't convey the content. I was not satisfied with ending.

The setting, characters and elements of mystery drew me in, but the ending was so unsatisfying. It would be like putting together a lavish dinner and then leaving it sit on the table. Disappointing.
