Simply thrilling, with clever use of flashbacks, this installment definitely lives up to Tom Clancy standards.

Well, RIP Tom Clancy. You had a good run.

There were prescient elements in this book that harkened back to Clancy at his best.

He will be missed.

A bit of an improvement over some of his more recent work. Perhaps that has more to do with a fairly decent second half of the book, and the use of a young Jack Ryan in sequences set in the past. This has both President Ryan and his son and colleagues at the black ops agency the Campus dealing with a resurgent Russia and a mystery dating back to the Cold War involving a shadowy Russian operative. Still, the problems remain that have plagued Clancy books since the post Bear and the Dragon era. He's disregarded continuity, inserted too much of his political leanings into things, and has created characters in the Campus era that just aren't that interesting. Jack Ryan Jr., Dominic Caruso, Sam Driscoll, and others just aren't compelling when you compare them to Jack Ryan and John Clark, and that's been a persistant problem in these books since the last good one. That said, however, the political and military situation he sets out here with his collaborator are eerily predictive of the current situation on the world stage, a gift Clancy has always been exceptional at. If this is indeed the final Jack Ryan book, at least the second half of it uplifts a slow start.

It would never be fair to hold Clancy to a literary set of standards. He is the "everyman's" master story teller, and I use yarn spinning criteria when I measure his works. This book contains one heck of a good yarn as told by the best of the best. I am stunned and mystified at how his plot points, almost perfectly, recount the events occurring today in the Ukraine. I hope the outcome of the current situation may be less bloody than the (optimistic) finale of Clancy's fast and furious novel. Even though the real situation is dangerous, deadly, and potentially catastrophic, neither reporters nor historians will ever be able to recount the history of todays events as well as Clancy foretells it, in this, his last and gut-wrenching novel.

I rated this book 5 stars as the story line and ending are superb. A wonderful closing for a great writer. Thank you Mr. Clancy, RIP.
I'm hoping a screen play is produced for what I'm sure will be an electrifying movie!
