The Wolves of Midwinter
It is the beginning of December. Oak fires are burning in the stately flickering hearths of Nideck Point. It is Yuletide. For Reuben Golding, now infused with the wolf gift and under the loving tutelage of the Morphenkinder, this Christmas promises to be like no other ... as he soon becomes aware that the Morphenkinder, steeped in their own rituals, are also celebrating the Midwinter Yuletide festival deep within Nideck forest. From out of the shadows of the exquisite mansion comes a ghost - tormented, imploring, unable to speak yet able to embrace and desire with desperate affection ... As Reuben finds himself caught up with the passions and yearnings of this spectral presence and the preparations for the Nideck town Christmas reach a fever pitch, astonishing secrets are revealed, secrets that tell of a strange netherworld, of spirits - centuries old - who possess their own fantastical ancient histories and taunt with their dark, magical powers.

Abysmal. If not for the pro-life flag waving and page upon page of detailed (and I do mean detailed) descriptions of the preparations for a huge Yuletide party, this book would be about 100 pages long. The protagonist, Reuben, is a limp dishrag and the females are cartoon characters. Could have used a damn good edit, as well. There are some very clunky passages, mainly when Rice runs out of steam and decides to just write "thingamajig" instead of coming up with something a bit more eloquent, and call it a day. Don't care what happens next.

What happened to my eloquent, decadent, rich favorite writer? This book feels so....casual. There's a paragraph on pg. 272 (of the hard cover) that should have been left out completely and she uses the word "whathaveyou" or "whatnot". Found the "here's where we're at" intro too casual. I'm used to Rice's stories being so rich. Also, the main characters are all perfect (except that they kill), leaving them flat and unbelievable. Also, was there a plot, or is this just a description of characters during the holidays? Normally I'm a huge Rice fan, but this novel is disappointing.

I find the other characters more interesting than our protagonist, Reuben. Perhaps this will change with the next book.
