This is a dark book with lots of violence that can be hard to read. Its interesting as you don't know who to trust. This is part of a series and some of the book talks about the past which could be boring if you're read the other books. Its part procedural on finding who tried to kill two police officers after a raid on a drug house that had a surprising find. A small part is about a man who finally comes to term with his past.

I love Karen Slaughter and the Will Trent mysteries however this one fell seriously flat for me. There was too much time spent on the women's conflicting, emotional past issues, as valid as they were, I understood the dynamic when I read it the first time. I did not need the chapters of repetition. And frankly, the big bad guy was painted as a terrifically elusive criminal, that wielded great power in the drug culture in several states over a long period of time...yet he was caught and mystery was solved in what seemed like a matter of token pages at the end. Too easy. Not clever. Not surprising. THUNK.

This installment brings back an old nemsis into Dr. Linton's life, and Will is right in the middle of everything. The characters, especially the evil ones, seem very real. As usual, Karin Slaughter writes another book I couldn't put down, staying up until the wee hours until I finished it.

Excellent book. Best of the series and one of the best books I have ever read.

How can anyone read this drivel?

If you are a fan of thrillers, do yourself a favour & start at the beginning of this excellent series. This latest instalment is everything a great thriller should be. You are truly hooked from the start as you follow the adventures of regulars including Sara, Will & Lena. The hunt is on for a particularly nasty criminal responsible for drug trafficking, murder, rape & child abduction, a man who may be more legend than reality. Everyone seems to have their own agenda & it's difficult to sort the good guys from the bad. By the time you reach the end, some will have survived, some won't & your jaw will drop when the identity of the mastermind behind it all is revealed. You don't have to have read the previous books to enjoy this, you'll just have a bit more background on the history between the characters. Highly recommend.

I have been a fan of Karin Slaughter since the first Grant County book, Blindsighted. Slaughter’s character develop is wonderful, her plots have plenty of twists and turns and her stories always leave me with wanting more. This latest book didn’t disappoint, although I was a bit surprised at the amount of violence. It’s difficult to comment on this single book since the individual books are part of the whole. This series is intriguing, suspenseful and very satisfying. 4.5 rating.
