Item Details

Andrew Yancy, late of the Miami Police, soon-to-be-late of the Key West Police, has a human arm in his freezer. There is a logical explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, his commander might relieve him of Health Inspector duties, aka Roach Patrol. But first Yancy will negotiate an ever-surprising course of events, from the Keys to Miami to a Bahamian out island, with a crew of equally ever-surprising characters, including: the twitchy widow of the frozen arm; an avariciously idiotic real estate developer; a voodoo witch whose lovers are blinded-unto-death by her particularly peculiar charms; Yancy's new love, a kinky medical examiner; and the eponymous Bad Monkey.

Hiassen's novels tend to be laugh-out-loud funny, and his ecological correctness is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. I love his style and eagerly await new offerings. In his latest, Bad Monkey, Hiassen explores his usual theme of human depradations against the environment. Once again, his protagonists are the noble few eccentrics who conscientiously object to the over-development of tropical oceanfront and wetlands. However, this time around I found Hiassen's narrative disjointed and chaotic, and I failed to engage with his characters until well into the novel. Part of my difficulty involved a fracas described in the opening chapter and referred to throughout the book. An assault that is essentially anal rape is presented as a humorous incident. It wasn't funny when Tarantino did it and it isn't funny now. I felt that Hiassen ventured perilously close to stereotype in his characterization of the various Bahamians who contribute to the plot.

Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry are
two of Florida's greatest exports !
There must be something in the drinking water at the Miami Herald :), where they both write columns.

Well that was a fun satire. I picked this book up randomly because it had been recommended to me on more than one occasion. I'm not sure why, but it really reminded me of a good Christopher Lamb novel. I plan to read more of his when I have the time.

One last note, I think this was the EXACT opposite of Chicklit... Dudelit?

Funny, engaging and quick to read. I enjoyed the crazy characters and crazier plot. I think I'll try another Hiaasen.

Wonderful read. We have waited to long since the last Hiaasen caper. Funny, exuberant and a wonderful send up of some current issues and excesses.

Good, easy read. The end was a little weak, but it was enjoyable to read none-the-less.

BAD MONKEY
Not the best book. But had to finish it just to see how it ended. Hiaasen, must be a good writer bc all reviews were glowing. Not all that entertaining.

Bad Monkey was my first Carl Hiaasen novel; it likely won't be my last. It served as a reminder that, while truth-with-a-capital-T is the spice that makes reading worthwhile, prose without dessert-at-the-end-of-the-meal can eventually leave you with tired teeth. This was pure dessert. It made me laugh out loud at least once or twice. The twisting plot and super-sized stack of characters (initially daunting to an aging memory) was repeated and re-explained so often there were no lumps in the custard. I didn't have to take notes. The cliff-hangers were hung with enough skill and frequency to keep me turning pages but without any ruthless reality which might palpitate my heart or upset my stomach. If the misadventures of roach inspector Andrew Yancy are indicative of the rest of the Hiaasen menu, I will be back for more.
