Quotes
Add a QuoteTony Mendez: "What happened?" Jack O'Donnell: "Six of them went out a back exit. Brits turned them away; Kiwis turned them away; Canadians took them in. Traffic calls them "house guests". They haven't left The Canadian Ambassador's house since it happened." Tony Mendez: "Why weren't we in ten weeks ago?" Jack O'Donnell: "Too dangerous. Got revolutionary guards going door-to-door like Jehovah's witnesses. Half of 'em think that Khomeini's been too lenient on the ones in the embassy." Tony Mendez: "What about The White House?" Jack O'Donnell: "Carter's sh*tting enough bricks to build the pyramids."
Lester Siegel (watching the network newscasts on the conflicts in the Middle East): "...Bad news, bad news. Even when it's good news, it's bad news... John Wayne's in the ground six months; this is what's left of America."

Add a CommentIt was a very interesting to watch movie - in the days of all movies having explosions, unrealistic heroes and unbelievable plots it was nice to see what is possible. I did find I kept unconsciously waiting for the agent Antonio to break into some sort of super hero rescue which just goes to show how brainwashed we are by hollywood.
The first half of the movie was a 4.5 Stars. Exciting, interesting, and the whole "Fake" movie angle was a fascinating insight into Hollywood and how big of a sham it really is. Unfortunately, once Affleck gets to Iran, the movie grinds to a halt. It could have used a few cuts in the second half to streamline it. But it's also a function of the real life story. The real story is the cover story that had to seem real by going to Hollywood and making a fake movie.
Excellent movie. Well acted, well directed and a griping story. Of course, some things were exaggerated for theatrical angst, but I did not mind in the slightest. The R rating is for language and the AMAZING amount of smoking, but that is it. I would recommend this movie to young adults and up and feel perfectly fine with them seeing it. As a side note, there is a documentary out called "Argo: The inside story". It interviews the real people from the actual event and adds to the movie itself. I would suggest that you watch the movie first, and then you watch the documentary.
I hadn't realized George Clooney had a hand in this as co-producer until the credits rolled. Ben Affleck did an outstanding job of conveying this extraordinary story, i.m.a.o. Alan Arkin cracked me up. And to those of Canadian heritage feeling slighted or under-appreciated by not enough American gratitude, here's my contribution: Argo f*** yourself... (lol... Ruh-roh! Here comes the hate-mail!) No, just kidding. Much thanks, eh? Have a Molson on me. You too, Tony Mendez, wherever you are.
In my view, Ben Affleck's directorial skills weigh just about his acting skills. Matured, well-seasoned performance by Alan Arkin was a big help. Arkin added homor and a bit of spice to this rather humorless, tasteless movie.
VERY GOOD MOVIE. SURPRISED THE STATE DEPT. DIDN'T STOP THIS. IRAN EVEN MORE AGAINST THE U.S. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE DIVULGED HOW THE CAPER WAS PULLED OFF. WHAT ABOUT THE NEXT GROUP OF HOSTAGES? WHAT IS THEIR FATE?
A good movie - the suspense and atmosphere of the times are excellent, and Affleck does a good job as the CIA agent given a hair-raising assignment. Just remember that, as others have pointed out, it's a long, long way from the truth. Search out other films, such as the Canadian Caper or books such as Ken Taylor's autobiography, if you want to know what really happened. One note: they didn't wait at the airport check-in for their tickets to be 'approved' in Washington - ticket approval wasn't moved around the globe instantly in those pre-internet days; instead, the Canadian Embassy had bought, and paid in advance for, seats for all them on every flight leaving Tehran that day for Europe, so that whenever they got to the airport, they could be on the next plane out.
Exciting tension ! ...which is all the more remarkable since we know the ending !! Ben Affleck delivered a very good story. BUT also ... check out the one star review by 'maggymaude' (see below) for some reality feedback !!
As director, I think Ben Affleck did a very good job and the movie was interesting and tense - especially at the end. I enjoyed it!
Very enjoyable movie. Whether the story is completely accurate, I don't know. Maybe I'll read up on it. But for entertainment purposes, it was quite good. I'm of about the same age as the younger U.S. diplomats that were in the Canadian embassy, but of course heard none of this story at the time.
