I found this book very thrilling, funny, and exciting. There was adventure around every corner and I had a hard time putting the book down, it was that good! The ending was very different from what I expected, though. I'm so sad to finish such a great classic!

I know many people are just dying to read this book after the movie, but i actually read this along time ago when i was little. I had good memories of my dad reading this to me, so i decided to read it again now that i am older. The book is just as good as I remember it, if not better. Such a beautiful and adventurous story. I LOVED THIS BOOK! there are few books that can compare with Tolkien's books. He had such a talent for forming beautiful classics! oh, and if you have any respect for the book don't watch the movie! The movie gives this book a bad name, they completely butchered the book with that movie.

This book was amazing! I believe that the movie and book were almost the same but I enjoyed both all the same. This book is about a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who sets off on an adventure with his companions the dwarves to recapture the dwarves mountain home and all the treasure inside of it. The only problem though is that the mountain is guarded by Smaug the dragon. Along the way Bilbo finds a mysterious object that helps him along in his adventure. You have to read to find out!

This, in my view, is one of Tolkien's best. I have read it four times and enjoyed it more each time. If you want to understand Peter Jackson's recent Film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, you should read this book. Although, if you don't like long reads, this book is not for you.

Classic fantasy fiction that comes to life with the adventure of Bilbo, the dwarves and Golum through Middle Earth. Loved the imagery and imagination used to create this world. Look forward to reading the Middle Earth trilogy to get to the know the characters even more. Loved how Bilbo challenges himself and takes intiatives to survive and not relying on Gandolf or the others. Kudos to Bilbo, the treasurer hunter!

A great book to read first if you want to read more of Tolkien's Works. This is Bilbo's story of Adventure with the dwarves to reclaim their treasure in the Lonely Mountain. The come across many a foe-but Bilbo learns he is quite brave and stronger than he originally thought.

"Bilbo Baggins, a respectable well-to -do hobbit lives comfortably in his hobbit hole until the day the wandering wizard Gandalf chooses him to take part in an adventure from which he may never return." (Novelist Review)

Other: How could anyone say that this book is a waste of time?!?!?! I've never regretted reading a Tolkien book! Not only is The Hobbit great, but so are all of the other books by Tolkien! If you liked The Hobbit you MUST read Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion!

Chip the glasses and crack the plates! / Blunt the knives and bend the forks! / That's what Bilbo Baggins hates-- / Smash the bottles and burn the corks! // Cut the cloth and tread on the fat! / Pour the milk on the pantry floor! / Leave the bones on the bedroom mat! / Splash the wine on every door! // Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl; / Pound them up with a thumping pole; / And when you've finished, if any are whole, / Send them down the hall to roll! That's what Bilbo Baggins hates! So, carefully! carefully with the plates!

"You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!"-Gandalf

Thorin: Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away ere break of day to claim our long-forgotten gold.

“Old Took's great-granduncle Bullroarer...was so huge (for a hobbit) that he could ride a horse. He charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram in the Battle of the Green Fields, and knocked their king Golfibul's head clean off with a wooden club. It sailed a hundred yards through the air and went down a rabbit-hole, and in this way the battle was won and the game of Golf was invented at the same moment.”

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty hole filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
