Add a Commentnote to blueskies - lol this isnt a hollywood film, its a british film. perhaps reviewers on here dont understand the connections between england & india. excellent, enjoyable film, dev patel will one day get to use his very british accent in a film lol, poor kid! but a great actor, holds his own alongside the greats of british cinema, show his work on "Skins" & "Slumdog Millionaire" was not flukey. entertaining & not racist, dunno where that came from! its portraying the world as it really is, not some rose-tinted version. very entertaining
I got this for my mom but she'd seen it so I watched it. It was pretty good.Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Dench, Nighy what a great cast. Worth the watch no matter your age.
Disagree that you need to be older to enjoy this film. Characters are deep, likeable; stories are interwoven; I will be reading the book too!
As long as you do not read too much into the plot, the movie was ok and had some entertaining parts however it relies on outdated stereotypes. I found parts of it to be racist - I am pretty much sure that call centres and hotels don't need to hire white people to succeed. I wish movies would move beyond the plots which show that people can only find themselves if they spend a lot of time in a different country.
Loved it!
Sugary sweet geriatric romantic dramedy. Some charming moments and humorous dialogue and situations, but not nearly enough. Good acting from the veteran elderly cast. The Slumdog and his lady friend dial in lame performances. Feh. I just wasn't feeling it.
Patronising, sexist and stereotyped to the point of cringe worthy, both for older people and Indians. Judi Dench does a walk-through that barely uses her talents, but manages to get out rather unscathed. That's the best can be said here. Mawkish dialogue, sexist and one-dimensional portrayal of the women especially, who are portrayed as desperately chasing the men who aren't fit to shine their shoes, to serve as sex-objects unto their dying day. This movie lies about old age. If you're young give it a miss, it's just plain stereotype, if you're older, be insulted and request your library get Iris, Maggie Smith on the BBC, and possibly the new Maggie Smith film, Quartet, The Visitor and Away with her. Quality movies that don't treat people like paper doll cut-outs.
A veritable spreadsheet of the English elderly and a celebration of the finest British thespians of a certain age, this culture-clash comedy offers a little something for everyone. However, by trying to please all types, this film fails to do incredibly well for any audience; it kind of falls into an unfocussed sense of mediocrity. However, some performances are well done. If you're a fan of the cast, perhaps you'll enjoy; if not, I wouldn't bother.
As a "mature" adult (I am 56), it was refreshing to see older people who were not just crotchety. This film is warm, funny, and poignant. It is never too late to learn, to grow, to change, and to love.
I liked this movie because as all movies it is meant to be entertaining. The movie is light hearted, has humour. The setting is charming. There is no foul language, car chase, sex scene or nudity. Refreshing! Great actors. All in all well worth warching. I gave it a 5 stars.
