Now that I have got to the end of the latest book to date I can pass judgement over the Charlier Parker series, and much like the Collector who presides over the decisions of his victims I have found this be wanting.

There are both good and bad elements to the series. The good is that the writing is excellent: descriptive, endearing and captivating. Once you get into the story you'll be hooked until the last page. While this is not the case for every book and moment it holds true for most. The stories are dark and haunting and the explored themes are for the most part interesting and for some they may even strike a chord within you.

The bad is that Charlie Parker is an unlikeable character, at least for me. I may have empathized with him in the first book due to his plight but after that I stopped caring about him. With each book he becomes more arrogant, obnoxious, unhelpful and obtrusive. What makes things worse is the addition of side characters to form a gang, that is seemingly invincible and above finding death, while all around are not so blessed. The humour too, is an eyesore. I've never been a fan of dry sarcastic humour that is so prevalent in American crime/thriller genres and here it becomes grating. I found the humour to be ill placed and not funny mostly.

The underlying plot, while intriguing, has become something of an annoyance too. The way it has been dribbled sparingly in the books is irritaing and I wish Connolly would find closure and end it soon. It's become the case of a single tea bag being used repeated to make a fresh cup of tea every time with the expectancy of maintaining full potency each time. Connolly needs to end the series once and for all and begin something new, or to stop writing entirely. I prefer reading about the end of Charlie Parker, and I hope it comes sooner than expected.

As for this book if you're a rabid fan of Connolly then you'll love it no matter what. If you're an admirer of his writing, as I have been, you'll be distracted from your routine but disappointed with the latest effort. If you're a newcomer...start at the beginning and lose yourself in Maine and Portland before passing your own judgement!
