I really enjoyed Jack Black's character as well as the story. I was pleased to see how they handled the "true story" and that real people from the town were used in the movie.

Quite a change of pace for Jack Black. He's a very quirky but well-loved member of a small community in Texas. His desire to help people gets him in trouble when he befriends an older widow (Shirley McLaine) who eventually dominates and controls him till he breaks. Matthew McConahey is the small town lawyer who thinks he's better than he is ... quite a different role for him as well. That this is based on a true story makes it all the more enjoyable. I really liked this film!

I enjoyed this movie. The fact that it's based on a true story made it even better. I have new respect for Jack Black. I will visit Texas one day....these people seem so real...I liked them!

Based on actual and strange events, this story could have been told in a number of ways. I think that the writer(s)/director(s) got it just right.

I enjoyed Jack Black in this conservative role as an undertaker who caters to the older widows in his community. Very polite and thoughtful gentleman. Then along comes Shirley McLaine as an ascerbic widow (surprise). Based on a true story, it is well worth watching Jack Black in this role.

It has to be one of the most unusual movies. Certainly not your average hollywood stuff.

I've watched this film more than once. Incredibly under-rated.... this film is funny and unique. Jack Black has such a beautiful voice!

For a murder, this is an oddly sweet film.

Jack Black is excellent. This movie, based on a true story, is funny and touching and so odd, that it just has to be true!

“Bernie” is a combination comedy, satire, noir art film that is somewhat based on a small-Texas strange capital crime. The director made it into a collage by including interviews of non-actors from that small town who may or may not be reading their lines or actually may be revealing their feelings about the crime. A bonus is we get to see Shirley MacLaine in a role that she plays in her mid seventies. The DVD special features includes a video the actual criminal speaking on tape (but audio blocked perhaps because prisoners are not allowed to be presented in any way by the prison system).
