In recent decades, Dr. John has been very prolific but he's also become more of a niche artist known to fans of mainstream jazz and more and more disconnected from larger popular culture. This CD, produced and recorded in collaboration with Dan Auerbach (of Black Keys fame), attempts to close that gap. Fans of Dr. John's more pianistic outings won't find much to sink their teeth into here but fans of his early R&B recordings (which have have always been the ones most likely to connect with a rock audience) should really dig this plugged in outing. This isn't exactly a pastiche of those early recordings but it's not a radical departure either, it's Dr. John picking up a thread he had left behind and tweeking it a bit with the help of a sympathetic collaborator.

Wow. I was already a Dr. John fan, but the addition of the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach has made this album truly amazing. If you aren't familiar with either the good Dr.'s work, or the music of the Black Keys, give this one a try. It's a great intro to both. If you are a fan of either, you don't want to miss this.
