Item Details

"Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fogletree just became number five. His body was found in the basement of a lakeside cabin he had built himself and frequently used on weekends. When he did not show up for a trial on Monday morning, his law clerks panicked, called the FBI, and in due course the agents found the crime scene. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies--Judge Fogletree and his young secretary. I did not know Judge Fogletree, but I know who killed him, and why. I am a lawyer, and I am in prison. It's a long story"--Publisher.

I found this book to be rather slow and plodding; not up to the usual John Grisham standards at all. I gave up as I lost interest.

I haven't read a Grisham book in quite some time, as a few of his books leave a lot to be desired. So my expectations of this one were not particularly high. But, I loved the Racketeer - it grabbed me from the very first page and carried my interest all the way through. The plot was clever and complex and would make a great movie. In fact, it is one of the best legal thrillers I have read in months.

I am a huge John Grisham fan. However, The Racketeer is a disappointment. It is about 100 pages too long and, unlike most of Grisham's books has been poorly reasearched and editied (how many svelte 125 pound women do you know who can lift a 500 pound casket from a snake infested hole unaided?). Either he was in an off year or he had a different editor than usual. Hoping his next lives up to his past performance.

This book may be interesting for those who are fascinated by the descriptions of interrogations, prison life and jurisprudence. To me it was so boring - I could not read more than half of it. And I tried.

Good book and a good plot. It wasn't my favorite of his but it's worth the read

Reasonably entertaining but Grisham usually has a "tight" story line that I love. This seemed to be loosly put together and not as great as his other books. Still... it made for an entertaining read

If you're a Grisham fan you'll like this one. Slightly better than his average.
