He had grown up in Chicago, learning to play basketball at a local playground. Once drafted, Derrick didn't disappoint the fans. He was named Rookie of the Year after his first season, and league MVP after his third. Derrick has also been thrilling fans with the work he does giving back to others. In 2011, he helped to raise money to renovate his childhood playground. He also donated money to charities that help the victims of natural disasters, such as the 2011 earthquake in Japan.
