I enjoyed this book but it was hard to get into at the very beginning. The premise of the race and the horses involved is very interesting and scary at the same time. I liked how the romance bloomed between the characters, but it wasn't overpowering. Good book, but at times a bit too much description.

Wonderful mixture of fantasy and a commentary on the exploitation of wild animals by humans.

i love maggie stiefvaters books so much! i have read all of them but this one is probably my favorite. it is such a good book and the end made me cry. i cant believe he came back!!! i would suggest you read this book if you dont want a boatload of romance but a very emotional journey. even if she saved the race for the end, just building up to it was a journey. i love her descriptions and...wow...just everything. READ IT!!!

I loved this book so much! The romance in it was very subtle and the ending was totally unexpected!

At first, when I heard about this book I was like, "Another teen paranormal romance. Yay..." But, although there are "paranormal" elements and "romance" elements, this book is not a paranormal romance. It's not even really a fantasy novel -- everything about this book is extremely realistic except the carnivorous aquatic horses. Most of the story comes from the characters' relationships to each other and the small island setting -- their emotions and motivations are protrayed with amazing clarity, realism and beauty by Stiefvater. This book is very, very good, and it's not like any YA novel I've read in the past five years at least.

On the island of Thisby, autumn brings with it the capall uisce -- fey "water horses" that long to drown or eat men. Since people can remember, the brave and foolish have tried to tame the horses in order to ride them in the Scorpio Races each November. Puck is an orphan who takes care of her three brothers. When she finds out her house will be taken from her if she doesn't pay for it, she enters herself in the Races -- the first girl ever to ride. Sean Kendrick is also an orphan, his father taken from him by the Races he loves. For him, winning the Race would mean getting everything he loves, his red water horse Corr and freedom. Even though Puck and Sean are competing, they are drawn to each other, two stubborn, determined and passionate souls. But will the Race tear them apart?

Other: There are some very descriptive scenes of violence so if you do not like blood then....and there is the language, not alot but some. The book overall is good but if you are under 12 years of age,eh, not really for you. It has horses alright but the thing is, they are scary horses. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU DO NOT LIKE BLOOD.
