In a future Chicago, sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior must choose among five predetermined factions to define her identity for the rest of her life, a decision made more difficult when she discovers that she is an anomaly who does not fit into any one group, and that the society she lives in is not perfect after all. In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue -- Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is -- she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are -- and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves, or it might destroy her. Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series -- dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. - Jacket flap.

I absolutely loved this book. Veronica Roth is so talented and I love her works. The entire series was brilliant, I loved the way the characters were developed, and the plot was so captivating. I could relate to most of the characters at different points of the story. Divergent is a must read for everyone, teen or adult. Definitely one of my top favorite book series of all time

I saw the movie before reading the book so there were no surprises for me. And... it's not a terrible book but its not great either. The story is fantastic; the writing could use a lot of polishing. I will be picking up the second book to see what happens but I'm not going into it thinking it'll be fantastic.

Summaries below are accurate- The book is a dystopian, and therefore overhyped, just like Hunger Games. This book is horrible.

In this dystopian society, in the future Chicago, those that reach the age of 16 are forced to pick their life. They must decide where they belong: Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless or Amity. Each faction has a goal. For example, the Abnegation believe that people are too selfish, therefore they show selflessness. Once they turn 16, they take a test to help them decide which faction is best for them. This story follows the life of a teenage girl, Beatrice Prior. When she takes the test, she learn that she is part of a rare group, she is Divergent. This means that she didn't fit into a specific group.
Through this story, it shows Tris' problems, decisions and her survival. Can she survive? Can she keep her divergence a secret? Will those that are hunting her find her?

Beatrice Prior and all other sixteen year olds in the future Chicago must make the most significant decision of their lives. They will decide to be Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless, or Amity. To help them with this decision, an aptitude test creates a simulation to find what faction the teenagers belong in. This test shows that Beatrice does not just show traits of one faction, but instead shows three. This makes her Divergent.
This novel shows Tris's struggle to survive in a world that wants to kill her and every other Divergent. Divergents are hunted down and killed by the will of a certain one faction that has a plan to control the others. The only flaw in their control are the Divergents, who "cannot be controlled". Tris must save not only herself, but friends and family from their impeding deaths.

It was a good book. Kept me wanting to read more. Can't wait for the rest of the movies to come out.

This is the first book in the "Divergent" series. Beatrice Prior lives in a dystopian future Chicago where society is divided into 5 different factions based on the results of an aptitude test. This test is taken by every member of the city at age 16. The next day at the Choosing Ceremony, they can pick any faction to spend the rest of their life with, regardless of the test results. Beatrice Prior gets 3 results, which makes her Divergent. Abnegation, which she was born into because both her parents were Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. She picks Dauntless at the ceremony. Read the book to find out what happens next ;)

Beatrice Prior, born in an Abnegation family should naturally be selfless, however she is not. When Beatrice takes the aptitude test to determine which faction she belongs to, she finds out she is a divergent. She is a mix of Abnegation , Erudite, and Dauntless. She is told never to tell anyone she is a divergent because it will get her killed. On the day, she chooses which faction she belongs to, Amity the peaceful, Abnegation the selfless, Candor the honest, Dauntless the brave, or Erudite the intelligent. Beatrice makes a surprising choice that shocks herself and other. In a new faction, she experiences merciless fights, loves, betrayal, and war. Will being a divergent help her threw the crisis?

Beatrice lives in a society that is divided into five factions that are dedicated to one trait each. Now that she is sixteen she must choose which of the factions she devotes her life to. Beatrice and the other sixteen year olds have a choice between the Abnegation to be selfless, the Dauntless to be brave, the Candor to be honest, the Erudite to be intelligent and the Amity to be peaceful. Before they decide they must take the aptitude test which will reveal the faction they belong to. Beatrice's results show that she is different than the other sixteen year olds because she qualified for three different factions which made her Divergent so now she has to keep the test results a secret or it can put her life at risk.
When it came to the time of the choosing ceremony, Beatrice did not choose to stay Abnegation but instead chose Dauntless. During Dauntless initiation Beatrice (now called Tris) went through physical training and a series of mental simulations. All of the training and challenges Tris had to face whether it was real or in a simulation made her realize that her Abnegation selflessness is what helped her gain Dauntless bravery. Though one question remains for Beatrice. What is Divergent?

This book is action packed and full of plot twists and suspense that had me sitting on the edge of my seat every time I turned the page. Veronica Roth's description of Beatrice's point of view was just detailed enough to make me feel like I was the character, living and doing everything she did. If someone in the book was holding their breath I found myself doing the same as if I were in the book. “Divergent” is the perfect title for this book because it has to do a lot with the different factions in the book. Also it is one of the reasons that made me choose this book. A title and plot that makes you think, is always a good read. This is the first book I’ve read by Veronica Roth and I am already a huge fan of hers.
