A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Hillenbrand, Laura

eBook - 2010
Average Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared--Lt. Louis Zamperini. Captured by the Japanese and driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor.

Being a Gen-Xer, I learned so much from Zamperini's story about the hardship endured by those who lived through WWII. My baby boomer parents could have told me, but this book made it real and clear. Every time I thought things were going to get better for Louis, he faced another disastrous turn of events. The details of his sufferings are difficult to read, but the reader is also treated to a front-row seat to one man's ability to endure, and to redeem his trials through his determination to survive, and eventually through his Christian faith. (Side note: Hillenbrand does a terrific of job of presenting his religious developments in a straightforward and respectfully appropriate way). I recommend this book highly.

Excellent read. History covers the torture and the fate of POWs during WW11, but does not do justice to what these men suffered. Men being lost at sea and suffering attacks by sharks is horrible. The planes didn't seem that well built yet and were difficult to fly. These brave men tolerated alot more than we realize. It's no wonder that they suffered even after returning from the war.

This truly is a book about torture. I felt tortured beginning with the first page until I managed to escape fifteen pages further at the end of the second chapter of this awful, poorly written trash.

I really looked forward to reading this after it was so highly recommended to me. Why people are taken in by garbage like this is far more than I can understand.

Doesn't even deserve one star.

This is a great book, well deserving of the praise it receives. The story of this amazing individual is at the same time compelling, upsetting and uplifting. Laura HIllenbrand knows how to tell a story with depth and feeling. It reads like great historical fiction, but the reader keeps remembering that "This really happened." This is a great book for lovers of aviation and WWII history, although a fair warning would be that many parts of the story are upsetting and graphic; but not gratuitiously so in the context of the character's life. This is one of the best books.

Pure inspiration. Eye opener to the survival mechanisms & sheer resilient nature of human beings.

This book was so amazing to read. Laura Hillenbrand is such a spectacular writer. She captured Louie's story in such a breath taking way that carries the reader through times of laughter, terror, sorrow and finally joy!
This book gave me a new perspective on World War 2 that I didn't know at all or not very much about. I have a greater respect and concern for soldiers and POWs as well.

This is a book I will defiantly share with others and I can't wait to see how the film will turn out too!

This is one of the best adventure nonfiction books I have read. I downloaded it onto my iphone and sat for several hours reading it in one sitting. A truly amazing story.

This is a book I want to own so I can read it again. And again.

I've recommended it to many, many people and not one has been disappointed.

To say it's amazing is an understatement.
