Average Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared--Lt. Louis Zamperini. Captured by the Japanese and driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor.

This is a great book, well deserving of the praise it receives. The story of this amazing individual is at the same time compelling, upsetting and uplifting. Laura HIllenbrand knows how to tell a story with depth and feeling. It reads like great historical fiction, but the reader keeps remembering that "This really happened." This is a great book for lovers of aviation and WWII history, although a fair warning would be that many parts of the story are upsetting and graphic; but not gratuitiously so in the context of the character's life. This is one of the best books.

Pure inspiration. Eye opener to the survival mechanisms & sheer resilient nature of human beings.

This book was so amazing to read. Laura Hillenbrand is such a spectacular writer. She captured Louie's story in such a breath taking way that carries the reader through times of laughter, terror, sorrow and finally joy!
This book gave me a new perspective on World War 2 that I didn't know at all or not very much about. I have a greater respect and concern for soldiers and POWs as well.

This is a book I will defiantly share with others and I can't wait to see how the film will turn out too!

This is one of the best adventure nonfiction books I have read. I downloaded it onto my iphone and sat for several hours reading it in one sitting. A truly amazing story.

This is a book I want to own so I can read it again. And again.

I've recommended it to many, many people and not one has been disappointed.

To say it's amazing is an understatement.

An amazing and inspiring story of a WWII survivor. A book that was very hard to put down and excellent to listen to by audible.

This book tells the story of Louis Zamperini and his experience in the Olympics as well as World War II. I learned a great deal about the war in the Pacific from this book and can utilize this in the classes I teach.

well-told tale; very appealing protagonist. Just the right amount of personal tidbits... the details of Japanese suffering and Japanese INFLICTED suffering were told with important cultural explanations. I have read SO much on the european theater of WW2; this really satisfied my curiosity on understanding just a bit more about WW2 in the Pacific.

I read some of the book out loud to my kids and they loved it. I only had to edit out very few details.
