I first saw "Near Dark" at a midnight movie when I was in college. I may have skipped SNL, gone out in the cold to get to the theater and spent money that I really couldn't afford, but I couldn't have cared less. Near Dark rocks!
Eleven years before "The Hurt Locker" Kathryn Bigelow made "Near Dark" which fell below the radar and yet showed her future promise. By directing a vampire script for action and not horror Ms. Bigelow energized the movie. Gritty and realistic, (for a vampire movie), "Near Dark" made "The Lost Boys", released the same year, look juvenile and silly. The struggle to suspend disbelief is minimal. This is adult scary, it meant to scare adults and if you aren't too jaded it will. Jenette Goldstein, Lance Henriksen, and Bill Paxton, fresh from working together on "Aliens" the year before, along with the rest of the cast, unknowns and seasoned character actors, delivered solid performances. The soundtrack by Tangerine Dream accents the imagery well.
Note for parents the R rating is accurate. Violence and gore make this movie unfit for children.

There are classic films and fun movies. Near Dark is a fun movie made by great filmmaker.

No wire work & magical effects,.. thank you. This good script is richly acted, and creates an engagingly 'realistic' vampire movie ! (...although I didn't buy the ending ?) The commentary by writer/director Katherine Bigelow is really worthwhile.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

This moive is one of the best vampire movies ever made. I could watch it over and over again.

Vacuous, over-synthesized, over-moussed, '80s vampire crud. (And evidently plastic fangs would've put them way over-budget.) Insipid writing, dialogue, special effects, (smoking blankets?! -- lol), etc. Just plain bad. 1½ stars for the gorgeous Jenny Wright (Pink Floyd The Wall).

Awesome vampire movie. Love the western edge to it and I like how the vampires are hillbilly/white trash/outlaw types. And Adrian Pasdar is gorgeous!!!

This is the best vampire/biker/western film every made. It stars Lance Henriksen, the brilliant character actor from the Alien films. Plus Bill Paxton puts on one of the best performances of his career - "FingerLICKIN' good!" I love that this movie was directed by a woman - the amazing Katherine Bigelow who also directed Hurt Locker. This cult classic is a genre bending masterpiece.
