Letters from Iwo Jima
Print
Sixty-one years ago, the United States and Japanese armies met on Iwo Jima. Decades later, hundreds of letters are unearthed from that stark island's soil. The letters give faces and voices to the men who fought there, as well as the extraordinary general who led them. Leading the defense is Lt. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of the island itself, Gen. Kuribayashi's unprecedented tactics transform what was predicted to be a quick and bloody defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat.

This is an excellent movie. The characters are deep and strong, a well done script and great acting. A must see for anyone that is interested in WW2 in the pacific.

This is an amazing movie that should be seen by all. It is deep and has subtitles but is still a very good watch. It is rare to see the other perspective in war. After you watch this movie you will feel like you have watched something worth watching.

Clint Eastwood did it again. All his movies have that stamp of slow, considered thinking and I see it here. Seeing the battle from the Japanese side is a whole different perspective. Their code of honour led them to hurt their cause as much as it did to help them. I winced so many times at the decisions made to save face that in fact helped them lose the battle. Having the dialogue in Japanese with English subtitles was very effective, and the Japanese actors all did their part to make the film a success. Another spare powerful work from Eastwood.

Powerful, powerful film about Iwo Jima from the viewpoint of the Japanese soldiers. Great acting, cinematography, and directing. Should be a must see for all government leaders who are thinking of going to war. There's a flaw in the set up of the video. There are normal subtitles available, but they're difficult to find. The barely readable ones are closed circuit text, not the subtitles.

SDH & closed-caption review
[1 = poor; 2 = fair; 3 = good, 4 = excellent].
Tiny, barely readable and blurry/fuzzy letters/words with the sub-titles. I gave it a 1 rating for sub-title readability & accessibility: Poor

Very well done movie portraying the Japanese experience on Iwo Jima. Watched Flags of our Fathers first, but thought this was a better movie. Never had a problem with the subtitles as another viewer mentioned. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, would have enjoyed more special features on the Japanese experiences. I found it to be a good portrayal of the message that they were all fighting and taking orders because they felt they had to, just as I'm sure most do in the time of war. Quite a touching portrayal of events. Also interesting insight into how their fighting beliefs and methods (bushido) worked against them. Worth watching.

This was a dark, yet moving, film. It's another great movie by Clint Eastwood. I really liked the fact that the story was kept in the native japanese tongue. I found the film focused a lot on character development, which is a great attribute to a war movie. I would recommend watching Flags of our Fathers after or before watching this one because it centers around the same war, but from the Americans point of view.
