Summary
Add a SummaryThis is one of my favourite books. I love the characters, particularly Clary and Jace. The way Cassie Clare writes is wonderful, it is beautifully descriptive and witty. I fell in love with Jace in this book, and he remains my favourite male character. I also love Clary, she is 'one of us'.
The back: Their hidden world is about to be revealed... When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary. Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....
Through meeting Jace, Alec and Isabelle - teenaged defenders of demonic evil on earth - Clary becomes embroiled in a world class struggle of good and evil and realizes that she may have superhero traits of her own.

Quotes
Add a Quote“Do you remember back at the hotel when you promised that if we lived, you’d get dressed up in a nurse’s outfit and give me a sponge bath?" asked Jace. "It was Simon who promised you the sponge bath," Clary said hastily. "As soon as I’m back on my feet, handsome," said Simon. "I knew we should have left you a rat.” - Jace, Simon, and Clary
“Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?'Lady Haven asked...... , "Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself." ..."At least," she said, "you don't have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland." "Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting.”-Jace Wayland and Lady Haven
“But you have to learn to bend a little,” said Clary with a yawn. Despite the story’s content, the rhythm of Jace’s voice had made her sleepy. “Or you’ll break.” “Not if your strong enough,” said Jace firmly. He reached out, and she felt the back of his hand brush her cheek…” JACE WAYLAND AND CLARY FRAY “He made a sound like a choked laughed before he reached out and pulled her into her arms. She was aware of Luke watching them from the window, but she shut her eyes resolutely and buried her face against Jace's shoulder. He smelled of salt and blood, and only when his mouth came close to her ear did she understand what he was saying, and it was the simplest litany of all: her name, just her name.” JACE AND CLARY!
"my rapier wit hides my inner pain.' -jace wayland
"That sounds terrific.Just you, your comatose wife, your shell-shocked son, and your daughter who hates your guts. Not to mention your two kids might be in love with each other. Yeah, that sounds like the perfect family reunion" -Clary
"The meek may inherit the earth, but at the moment it belongs to the conceited. Like me. (Jace)" "Don't tell me," Jace said, "Simon's turned himself into an ocelot and you want me to do something about it before Isabelle makes him into a stole. Well, you'll have have to wait till tomorrow. I'm out of commission." He pointed at himself - he was wearing blue pajamas with a hole in the sleeve. "Look. Jammies." "Jace," Clary said, "this is important." "Don't tell me," he said. "You've got a drawing emergency. You need a nude model. Well, I'm not in the mood" "I have a high pain threshold. In fact, it's more of a large and tastfully decorated foyer than a threshold. But I do get easily bored" (Jace)
The rat, huddled in the hollow of her palms, squeaked glumly. Delighted, she hugged him to her chest."Oh, poor baby," she crooned, almost as if he really were a pet. "Poor Simon, it'll be fine, I promise---" "I wouldn't feel too sorry for him," Jace said. "That's probably the closet he's ever been to second base."
"To love is to destroy, and to be loved is to be destroyed." - Jace Wayland

Add a CommentI read the Infernal Devices trilogy first, and I admit, if you read that first, the beginning of this book is a little dull because they have to explain a lot of things, but after the explanations were over, I LOVED IT. It was the BEST BOOK EVER. I'm not even exaggerating. My heart was torn into a million pieces at various times during the book, I laughed out loud, I had a blast reading this. It really was something amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about when I swear by the Angel that this book is amazing.
This book is amazing, I loved it me and my friend gossip about this book every day, I recommend this book to the world. Well not younger people but you know what I mean.
Absolutely the best book i have ever read!!!!!! The whole series stays consistent and is never boring. The whole idea is very compelling and Cassandra never disappoints. Jace and Clary's relationship is hilarious and very intense. As Jace struggles to accept himself the only person who won't let him push them away is Clary even though it is she he pushes away the most.
this book is a great page turner, the character development is good. however the series really drags on, so to preserve the quality of the story, i would have been better off to leave the books after number 3....
I've read all of the books and they're really good. When I picked them up I wasn't able to put them back down. Really good. I'm kind of sad though because I saw the trailer and it looks like it's going to be similar to percy jackson and the movie. I think they'll be completely different
Took me a while to get into this book (tried 3 times!) but glad I persevered. Now I can't wait for the movie and to read book 2!
I really liked this book. I don't trust the end. Someone is lying, right? I just saw that this was going to be made into a movie with the lead from Camelot and the Queen from Game of Thrones. I am very excited to see it. I love the character Jace and I really liked Simon, though he is not a big enough presence. Clary is fine; she has some really good one liners, but is portrayed a bit too dense and passive for my liking. Look forward to the next book!
This book reminds me a bit about twilight due to the vampire/werewolf thing.
Fun series. Devoured the first 3 books in one week!
oh come on i was really hoping jace and clary would be a couple ...... oh well now i hope jace and alec become a couple *mistchivous smile* I love this book its amazing and its so shocking in the end
