Stunning. Absolutely brilliant, but not for the faint of heart as it contains some bloody violence and heart-pounding action scenes that will crescendo to a point. All in all, not to be missed and worth the read if you decide to pick it up. Prepare to take a house as your own. Prepare to be hooked.

Excellent work. However, you may persevere for a few pages to really catch on to the sorry. If not you may lose interest before really get into the groove. It may help to watch a few episodes of the HBO series to help to you understand the plot of the story which is difficult to follow as a result of the way the chapters were written. However once you understand the story-line, the book seem to be a lot better than the TV series, to me at least. One more thing and this is a warning! The moment you finish book one (The Game of throne's) you will be hooked. You will always be on the look out for the next book.

Martin writes well, but ultimately I lost interest. There is no thematic compass directing this sprawling soap opera, and the author seems to have little respect for his characters. This novel has lots of action and would especially appeal to gamers.

Great storytelling that more 'serious' authors would be advised to emulate. Martin's labor of love is an infectious read and an amazing accomplishment. He writes convincingly from multiple vantage points, a fifteen year old would-be king, an unloved royal 'imp', an adolescent royal tomboy, an omnipresent eunuch on the royal court. No small feat and one that spurs his audience's interest throughout his massive masterwork. In addition, Martin clearly has a penchant for plot development. His characters are deliberately developed and, if anything, his plots are even more so. But Martin is deceptive and on multiple occasions I marveled at how far the plot had developed, even with a methodical pace. This level of investment, care, and craft are what's missing in fiction today. Let's hope more lauded authors notice.

A medieval soap opera. Set in an undefined non-Earthly location, a huge cast of characters plots, battles, kills, makes love, betrays, eats, dreams, and so on. There seems to be no overriding goal or objective other than the attaining and retaining of political power. The goings on are tiresome after a while. Even more tiresome are the never-ending descriptions of what every character is wearing and the banners and cloaks they carry with various symbols representing their families. Martin is a good writer and good plotter. The book is enormously complicated, but he manages to hold it all together and not let any of the thousands of threads slip through his fingers, so far as I can tell. But I found it far too long and somewhat pointless. I wanted to read this to see what all the fuss was about. Now I know, and I'm not inspired to read the rest of the series. I might watch the TV series because I enjoy a good, melodramatic soap, and it would be easier to see the colours of their cloaks than read about them.

This book was great. I thought it would take me a while to read because of it's length but it was so interesting I couldn't put it down. Too bad my university doesn't carry the second book in the series because I would be reading it while in school. Looks like I'll have to wait til Christmas break. The characters and the way the author describes each on especially the different fighting scenes are great. Only one character I dislike the most is Sansa but the rest I like :)

Reading this while watching season 1 on HBO improved my enjoyment of the epic. I am definitely a fan of several characters, and can't wait to see what Martin does with them over the next several books. This one is a bit hefty, but it didn't bog down as much as I expected it to. I'd recommend it to all fans of classic fantasy and large-scale court intrigue/epic battle stories.

I think I would have had trouble with all of the names if I hadn't watched the HBO series first. So while I'm usually a read-it-first kind of gal, I was actually really glad that I'd already watched the show. Even knowing the story, I was still hooked and wanted to keep reading more. [On a side note, I am supremely impressed with how HBO stayed true to this book. Incredible! There were only a small handful of scenes that were new to me and some of the characters' ages are different, but the rest was just *spot on*!]

Do not start reading this book unless you have a day or two where you can sit and do nothing but read it. It draws you into the story and won't let go of you.
