Steven Spielberg's feature film debut, and a great thriller, with hints of his greatness to come. Shot in less than two weeks, it was originally just a made-for -TV movie, but was so good they filmed more footage for an overseas theatrical release.

'Duel' is unlike any suspense thriller I have ever seen. It is the first time in a long time that I was literally at the edge of my seat while viewing. It must be the mind-boggling simplicity of the plot that makes it seem so heart-pounding. A travelling salesman is targeted for death by a psychotic truck driver, which is all the story you need for 82 minutes of suspensful vehicular mayhem! Steven Spielburg's first motion picture debut, and the film you have to thank for making 'Jaws' a reality. One of the most uniquely terrifying suspense thrillers I have ever seen.

I first saw this 'David vs. Goliath' psychological thriller when I was a young kid, and it scared the hell out of me. (lol) According to Steven Spielberg, this feature film directorial debut launched his career. It's got the suspense of a Hitchcock flick. The faceless wingnut in his rusted retro Peterbilt, relentlessly barreling down on poor skittish Dennis Weaver in his puny (but sensible!) Plymouth Valiant. I thought it was very well done, for a '71 "ABC Movie of the Week". Bonus features with Spielberg and writer Richard Matheson are very interesting. FIVE STARS.

I found myself feeling a mixture of things throughout the entire duration of this film. Chiefly, I felt tense, frustrated and the constant need for some sort of resolution. I cannot imagine myself being in this guy's shoes; especially driving a retro car like that! It's a good movie overall considering the time.

drama - good for the period but lacking good stunts for a car chase movie. Creepy truck, muy bien.

Dialogue? We don't need no stinking dialogue! We have big, stinking truck instead!

Seriously: there's oodles of story you can tell without using words. This would work just as well without any sound as it does with.

David Mann: (mocking his wife's voice): "Well dear, did you have a nice trip? (his response) Uh, no, no... Just the... just the same old thing... o-boy, o-boy, o-boy..."
